Top 25 Outdoor Movie: The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is our next stop on our list of Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time. This classic film is for the entire family, and will even bring back some memories for the older members of your community. Here’s a trailer for the film:

The Wizard of Oz follows Dorothy (Judy Garland), a young girl from Kansas who longs for another place beyond her simple farming life. She is knocked out by a window during a tornado and is swept off to the magical Land of Oz. There she meets the good witch Glinda (Billie Burke), who tells her that to get back to Kansas she needs to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, where she’ll meet the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan), who can help her get home.

Along the way she meets the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), who is looking for a brain; the Tin Man (Jack Haley), who needs a heart; and the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), who is looking for courage. They believe the Wizard will solve their problems, so they set out with Dorothy to find the Emerald City. But the journey is not without trouble, as the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) tries to get her glistening red slippers back from Dorothy.

We think the Wizard of Oz will make a great selection for your next outdoor movie for several reasons. First, everyone will love it, and it will definitely draw a big crowd. You could also pair the screening with a costume contest, with audience members dressing up as characters from the film. You could even lay out a yellow brick road running down the center of the aisles toward the outdoor movie screen. The possibilities are endless with the Wizard of Oz!
