Red Wing, Minnesota: ‘October Sky' Outdoor Movie in Red Wing

The 1999 film October Sky, based on the life of Homer Hickam, screened on August 16 on a 46-by-33-foot inflatable screen at Bay Point Park in Red Wing, Minnesota. Pre-show entertainment began at 7:30 p.m.; the film started at 9 p.m.

Hickam is a coal miner's son who was inspired by the Sputnik launch to build rockets, against his father's wishes. The cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Hickam, Chris Cooper as his father, and Laura Dern as his teacher. (Trivia: October Sky is an anagram of Rocket Boys, the title of Hickam's memoir.)

Cinema Under the Stars was presented by Look Media Productions and Twilight Zone Outdoor Cinema. Admission was free; popcorn and treats available in the park.
