Students at Vanderbilt University gathered on Alumni Lawn to watch the 2008 presidential debate on a 25-foot inflatable screen, with free pizza provided by the Vanderbilt Student Government and the Election Alliance. The goal was to encourage students to vote.

“The public screening of the debate was a great idea,” said sophomore Michelle Colvin. “It is comforting to know that there are other Vanderbilt students who are interested in our political system, regardless of their views.”

Supporters of both parties called the outdoor cinema event a success, saying it brought students together and gave undecided voters a chance to learn about the candidates. Before the debate aired, information on early voting in Davidson County was distributed to the crowd.
